Chapter Six

D espite the late hour, Piazza Santa Margherita still buzzed with both locals and tourists sitting outside the bars and restaurants that ringed the square. A few people even slow danced out on the cobbles. Small groups of youths gathered around the fountain to talk and enjoy the warm night climate. Some of those youths also drank from bottles or else sat cuddling and kissing partners. There was an overwhelming calm sense of tranquillity in the Venice air this night.

“You’re being very quiet,” Isobel remarked as we walked over the Rialto Bridge on the way back to the apartment.

“Am I?” Of course, I knew she was right, not that I was the only one who’d barely said a word since leaving Salzano. The truth was, I felt let down, abandoned and disappointed. What had I been thinking anyway? That a girl like Isobel would get carried away with the evening’s ride? Did I believe we’d share the perfect kiss in a dimmed corner of a salsa bar before rushing to the toilets to fuck each other’s brains out? Isobel was one of the most beautiful girls I’d ever clapped eyes on. She could have any man she wanted. Let’s face it, I was never in with a shot to begin with, not even for one hot, fiery night of Italian passion.

After three songs, I’d attempted to return to my seat, only to find myself being ‘borrowed’ by someone else. Five songs after that, I’d finally managed to sit down from when I got to watch Isobel dance from a distance for what seemed like forever. She was breathtakingly good but that didn’t make it any easier to see. The muscular Italian guy with the tattoos did not want to let her go, not at all, and had insisted on taking her number before finally allowing her, and myself by extension, to leave the bar.

“Yes!” She prodded me on the arm and I hated to say it, but it felt good. I was supposed to be pissed off at her, yet if she was to touch me again, I couldn’t be held responsible for what I might do, so I inclined slightly to the left, leaving a larger gap as we walked. She noticed immediately and the anger told in her voice. “You’re being very quiet, Molly, and you know you are.”

So, this was the mildly angry Isobel. All it did was make me want her even more, to know she wasn’t the perfect angel I’d assumed, but a girl who could get under my skin, and I hers.

“Shops on a bridge,” I muttered. The Italians had it down. Let’s hand it to the world masters when it came to architecture. I’d be sure to return here alone and spend some time browsing the wares on offer, maybe get a solo photo at the apex.
